Dang- I've been up here near the D for nearly two years and I had no idea. Guess I need to get out more. If you ever DO get tired of the WEB version of Detroit and find yourself taking a visit in physical form, drop me a note and I'll buy you dinner...
Signed,
A former stepbrother.

"I submit that a business model that requires a disposable workforce creates the seeds of its own destruction."

you are very correct Derrick... though the business model may not sow its own destruction... it's just destruction for the people and the neighborhoods... though I guess at some point hardly anyone will have the money to buy the crap they're selling (this is also the vicious circle of Walmart proliferation.)

-from Mike in Toledo (by De-troit) and I'm from the Pittsburgh area (very familiar with this type of landscape, I grew up in something like it.)

I hate to sound anti-american, but durn it, if we had an economic system that valued people even remotely, we wouldn't be so "ruined."

I hate to sound anti-american, but durnit, If they just made a car even remotely as reliable as my toyota truck, they'd be not so "ruined" But maybe "ruined" is part of the charm?

I owned a Chris-ler once, NEVER AGAIN.

Asian guy once told me that american cars stink because Japan tells suppliers how to make what they need and sticks with same supplier year after year; while in America we say....."DUH....... JUST BUY THE CHEAPEST ONE, VERNOR".

"QUALITY", AS MR PIRSIG SAYS IN HIS ZEN MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE BOOK.....(EXITS SOAPBOX).

Are you familiar with the coffeetable book "The New American Ghetto" by Camilo Jose Vergara? It contains beautiful photos of Detroit's decayed buildings, along with a serious proposal to turn what's left into a tourist attraction, as America's first true ruins.
