I think it's more painful for those of us who grew up in earlier eras. Back then, when someone said something, you had a pretty good chance of them meaning it. But now that most human beings have been replaced by soulless zombie automatons, they don't have any real association with the crap that comes out of their mouths. they just parrot the last thing they've heard.

Things happen so much faster now thanks to the internet, instant messaging, etc.....Willie Nelson having a "smoke" on the roof of the White House, Billy Carter peeing on the runway after quaffing 12-18 Billy Beers. Much of it all became a slow moving word of mouth urban legend. It seemed more liberal then, or people were more tolerant of substance abuse. I remember seeing Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show telling Buddy Rich he wanted a lid of whatever he was using...And Anita Bryant had her own show if I am not mistaken. It was on in the afternoons in Chicago on one of the 3 big networks. Viewers had 7 channels to choose from. Ah yes! The Seventies! In that era Archie Bunker was considered a buffoon. Today he would have some kind of a cabinet post I suppose...or at the very least a radio call-in show...
