I was stationed at Yuma Proving Ground, Az at the time of these murders & the murders of the family (the 1st ones committed by the Tison's & Greenawalt after the escape) took place on the Proving Ground. I was, sadly, among the personnel that helped to pick up the remains of that family. Let me just say that their murders were horrible beyond anything that can possibly be imagined.
While I agree that Ricky & Ray should have been spared the death penalty; I cannot say the same for Greenawalt. As for Gary Tison, I am actually pleased that he died slowly & painfully. What he & Randy Greenawalt did to that family deserved no less!!

My family is, by marriage, related to the Tison's. My mother and Dorothy were best friends growing up. Dorothy and Gary met while he was in jail. I remember as kids, that the boys told us their dad "worked" at the prison in Florence. Mom told us later the truth, but told us not to say anything because it would hurt their feelings. Everyone knew the man Gary was - except his boys. Dorothy was even known to say that Gary was a better father from prison than most men who lived with their kids. Now that Dorothy is dead I can say - Those boys never had a chance! It breaks my heart that they will spend the rest of their lives in jail paying for the sins and delusions of their parents!

Hey, great post! I just read the book. I especially love the page about Bud Gomes, the last-meal-scoffing prison warden. Thanks, UF MIke
