Just found the KCAC site. This brings back so many memories! I grew up in Phoenix and remeber the first time I heard KCAC. After a childhood of KRIZ and Krux, it was a revelation. Honestly, I was searching he net cuz I coudn't get part of an old Bunkhouse Kapers routine out of my head. Are those or the Love Workshops available? I really dont remeber Love Workshop. I may have left town for college by then. I too would gladly pay any costs.

Rich --

PLEASE digitize your Bunkhouse Capers collection, and send me a copy! I am dying to hear them! (I would be glad to host them as well, if you are interested.)

can't believe i just came across this interview. i actually still have 1/4" tape of many bunkhouse capers shows. it was so insane. of course, then, i was a little 20 year old going to asu and thinking peace, love, sex, and obtuse humor. i think i may have to seek out those tapes, get them on a mp3 format and start laughing again. and believe it or not, i still use some of their humor lines. yes, i'm whacked!!!

This blog is really turning into a great resource for everything Love Workshop. Thanks for this interview! If only Russ were still actually selling houses, I'd buy one from him just to brag to my friends that I bought a house from Craig...

I too first learned about KDIL from Don Bolles and his friends. I never heard the station, but I still have a cassette somewhere that has some brief excerpts. I need to find that tape!

Derrick,

Thanks so much for this "Wonderful" interview. I missed out on KCAC at the time, but KDKB's birth and glory years coincided perfectly with my high school and early college years. During that time there was no other radio station: radio listening in Phoenix began and ended at 93.3 FM.

I was surprised to learn that Russ had something to do with KDIL. In the Summer of 1975 I learned about KDIL through Jimmy Giorsetti (aka Don Bolles of the Germs and 45 Grave.) At the time he was in possession of the pirate transmitter, which was about the size of a pack or two of cigarettes. One afternoon we hooked it up to my Realistic receiver and broadcast for a short time. I ran over to my parents house about a half a mile away and just barely was able to pick up the signal.

Now I want to go back and track down my all-time favorite Wonderful Russ line, "I will take a fine china plate, hurl it as though it were a frisbee...and chip your teeth."

I found out about this blog when a friend forwarded the Russ interview to me. I plan on stopping by again.

I confess, I don't recall listening to KSLX much. However, if I ever do interview Bob Bell, I'll probably ask him about the Razz Revue.

Great interview! Thanks, Derrick.

I remember the KCAC/KDKB years and Bob Boze Bell's show on KSLX. Was it Wonderful Russ who appeared once as "Paul McCartney," even though he obviously *wasn't* Paul McCartney? It was completely hilarious to hear outraged listeners call in outraged raged that this Fake Paul was on the the air. "McCartney" staunchly defended himself as the real deal...and it felt like lots of KSLX listeners never got the joke.

I'd love to hear that broadcast again. Maybe you should interview BBB about all the comedy stuff he did on KSLX?

I had the pleasure of hearing " just a little bit" of his comedy stories but this interview is fantastic. I'm part of the raving Russ fans in his "new" arena but now understand where he honed his craft of being...so damned likable!
