I worked with Les Humphries in a group called "The Summer Set" from 1965 to 1966 when he first left the Marines. Our group was working at a night club in Leicester Square call the "400 club". We left there in October 1965 and signed a management deal with Marquee Artists touring and working at the Marquee as second group to The Who and every Saturday for Radio London Show. In December 1965 we went to Germany and played the Top Ten Club, followed by the Savoy Club in Hanover, returning to the Top Ten in April. The band eventually split with Les in July of 1966. I played saxaphone and the lead guitarist was Marin Jenner who eventually worked with Cliff Richard. The last time I saw Les was when he represented Germany at my home town of Brighton in the Eurovision Song Contest. He will be sadly missed.

Our story started when I was 1( and I saw at a friend's the mexico and mama loo singles. As I was birn 71 I never knew the group when they were in their fame but when I saw those two records sleeves I knew my was there, not exactly where as I didn't even know Les Humphries was a name. I wrote to the Gema and I added a letter to the group in a terrible english and well none of us knew how it got to Leslie and then as he said to me I never bothered in my life in replying to fan's letters but I felt the need to call you. We did a lot of work together, four books, an achieve autobiography I worked on with himbefore he died and then when came of age we became lovers, we were in love anyway. I was at the burial and let me tell but it was in no way a burial but a bloody masquarade, like abirthday party where all the old squares were showing off and where everyone but were drunk before midnight. Ande there, were his sons giving interviewwand all that making a orofit out ther father's death. They haden't had any relationsip with since Leslie's mother's died in 1986. I was not share my life with the Great Les HUmphries but just of nwith my Leslie who would cook me cabbage soup, do the the housework because no one seems to realise that behind the star there a an a humqn being that life had wounded hadn't not be nice with. A man I saw into tears and whose life by heart certainly better than anyone. And when I saw those arseholes acting that way because no respectwas paid, not an ounce of, just hypocrite and unconvincing amazing grace and then I found myself into a birthday party with a woman harrassing me that she I had worked on to the auto biography and should publish it but I won't because first it's not my life and then ihe is here anymore to stand up for himself . How do you think I felt when read all tjose terrible things in the german papers, that he was perse, violent and all that... I know what I am talking about and I can tell He the only man who really showed and respect to me. He waqs not an angel, had terrible angers I was not responsible but He knew He could just " blow" I would be here. It was not easy everyday but well, those were the happiest years of my life. I am not even 39 and I am gone with Him and here no day and no night when I don't cry. I never ever felt such a pain, though I buried all my family. When I got the letter from the sollicitor I didn't need open it, I kew what it was sayins as Leslie had left on my mobile a strange message and then I couldn't get through and we would call ouselves twice or three time a week. When He died I sang Him a song ansking him for an angel but the person he sent - I won't name it he will recognize himself - just fooled me, treated like shit and yet were good friends but I suppose knowing I am sad and making harder form me is a game he enjoys. I never ever tried to search for Leslie as there was just ONE like HIM as I was told and now if people want to hear what kind oh Man he was and not the star I can say all as I am not ashamed anything the love we had was beautiful. I stped believed as I did a

Hi Derrick,

Thank you so much for posting this! It's good to know there are people in the US who have heard of him too. I lived in Germany in the late 60s/early 70s so I caught them at the height of their success.

Are you are still interested in the documentary about Les Humphries? If you are, I would be able to send you a copy.

Here in the UK LHS albums seem to be shelf warmers, although they did once play St-Martins-In-The-Fields in 1973. Last year I was lucky enough to get hold of some vinyl in a charity shop but am still desperately looking for the 'We'll Fly You To The Promised Land' and 'Sing Halelujah' albums.

If anyone has these I'd be more than happy to trade, of course. :-)

All the best, Kevin

Hi again.

Okay psycho is of course a strong word and sure you can't always believe
what you see and hear on TV but this comes from the testimony of the
members of the band who were there.Have you seen it?If not it's out on DVD.
Only downside is that it's mostly in German.
I'm not sure I agree with the charming psychocanon of LHS as you put it.
I also remember reading about Les Humphries and Jimmy Bilsbury in court
on trial for kicking down some fans problably eager for autographs or
something.
But you should always remember the good things in life and omit the bad ones
and I choose to remember the unique sound they had, the happy swinging sound
that has always exited me.
Let's remember those happy times with smiles on everybody's faces and good cheers even if it was only a front.

Regards Ole and a merry Christmas and a happy new year to everyone.

No disrespect to fans, friends or family, but it's this so-called "psycho" element that gives the LHS canon so much of its charm! Of course, you can't always believe what you see on teevee either...

Hi everybody.

The second Dane to appear on this site(Hej Dan)!I too grew up as a teenager
in the 70'ties to the music of LHS.I also went to a concert once.
Recently I watched a documentary on LHS on German TV.That was more than I
needed to know!I mean no offence, especially considering that I'm just as a big
fan now as then, but it appeared in the program that he apparently was more
or less a psycho. That really was a downer.I don't know how many saw that
program but apparently it chocked the whole of Germany as well(the fans ).
I'm still in the process of collecting as many CD's of LHS as I can.If anyone
can direct me to the biggest source of LHS CD's I would greatly appreciate that.
Lastly I'm myself a wouldbe musician and would love to carry on the speciel
sound they had somehow. In it's basic form it's of course gospel but I'm looking
to somehow modify it to more contemporary sound.
Also I conquer that somekind of a tribute album would be in order.
Hope I haven't stepped on to many toes with this contribution to LHS aftermath.
Remember,I'm a dedicated fan even after all these years.

Regards Ole.
