Why do I continue to drag myself out in the open like this, week after week? For one thing, it helps to counter the toxic effects of a 40-hour week in the name of another man’s dime. It’s also a great way to add extra enjoyment to my collection. In addition to the thrill of the hunt, the capture and the inevitable cataloging (always with the cataloging), I can also revel in the pleasure of sharing all this ephemeral crap with my visitors.

I also love it when the wrong people visit this site by mistake, venting their disorientation and discomfort in the comments. I especially love it when they use terms like “elevator music” as if this was incisive criticism. After all, some folks still obsess over “authenticity,” preferring “immediacy” and “spontaneity” above all other concerns. Somehow, the soundtrack to a long-defunct Saturday morning kids show or a 30-year-old vanity pressing from an unknown lounge singer just doesn’t work for them

But for those of you who just want a little mundane background music for your misanthropic existence, a little something to listen to while you put your pants on one leg at a time (just like the next guy), I hope this podcast fits the bill.

    Mr. Bostrom–
Are you a fan of the late great Chaino? He was definintely the “wild man” of exotica!
Africana and Beyond is a masterpiece, as is Kirby Allan presents Chaino: New Sounds in Rock. (Kirby Allan by the way is a Mesa, AZ resident) My brother was priviledged to write the liner notes to both of these CD re-issues. Also it’s nice to hear that you’ve kept your comics from the 70s. I remember you turning me on to the EC Classics some 30 years ago, they still remain a passion for me. Here’s hoping you’ll include Chaino in an upcoming “little podcast”.

I got some Chaino in my collection, and I seem to recall the reissues as well.

Hey saw this on BoingBoing.net today and love it, how do I get the previous 12? The links always take you to #13.

    Thanks and great collection!

My xml file contains all thirteen episodes. Different browsers may handle the info differently. The best thing to do is use the link to “subscribe” to the feed, ether with a news reader (i.e. Google Reader) or through iTunes.

Jeez what kind of elevators are these bozos riding? Doesn’t sound like any elevator I’ve ever been in. :)

Terrific. Really hits me where I live. I like to hear things I’ve never heard before which sound like they are already in my collection. Great job sir.

Well its the unfortunate truth of our age that for lovers of our type of music, it is truly the best and worst of times, depending on who you happen to be around.

But take heart, Derrick, in my house (well, apartment) your name is mentioned weekly, if not daily, as your reports from the country have become musical staples since I searched out Connie Eaton’s Don’t Hang No Halos on Me after hearing it on Luxuria a couple of months ago.

I donated a c-note during the last fund raiser, although a paypal screw up kept from registering during your show, and I’m ordering Joe E from Eabla. My hope is advertisers will eventually value us enough to get Luxuria off the pyramid advertisers list.

So rickroll the nay-sayers to the latest Jonas brothers and keep the good tunes flowing.

Two requests: More reports from the country, or at least more tunes from the greats such as Nat Stuckey and Connie Eaton. And I know it would be more work, but would be possible to break up the tunes into individual mp3s on your podcasts?

    Thanks for everything!!

    Hi Derrick,

Love your blog, especially “your favorite little podcast”.

I subscribed, but it seems many of the broadcast just drop off mid way through.

Are the full broadcast of each episode available, or am i doing something wrong? I even tried downloading them rather than pulling them from iTunes and they stop in the same place.

Anyway, they are free, and great - so if what i am requesting is trouble no worries… I should be happy with what i get and be thankful.

Great work. Thanks for keeping us entertained!

    Big fan,

    Chaz.

    Chaz –

I’m almost certain the problem is that my host’s server is timing out. Either that, or yours is (what with more and more ISPs throttling their users’s speeds, this is more and more of an issue). My feed probably can’t handle too many people hitting on it at once. The podcast is on the same host as my main site, and as it gets more popular, so increases the growing pains.

I’ve had this happen to some of the more popular podcasts I subscribe to. I usually just try again. What I’m going to probably have to do is add a download link in addition to the feed. Hopefully, I’ll find the time to to this in the next couple weeks.

Thanks for following me, and keep trying!

Terry Now, Thanks so much for the kind words about me and Chaino and for the mention of Chaino’s CD’s. It’s always good to hear coments on Chaino’s awesome talent. Producing all of his Lp’s was one of one of the brighest highlights of my life. The other is enjoying all the interest in his CD re-releases after a half century past and at this time in my life. Our third CD will be out shortly. Is your brother Dan Nowicki? If so it was also my greatest peasure to have Dan, my good friend, write Chaino’s CD liner notes. No one on this planet could have done a better job. To clarify all confusion of Chaino fans, I have our true story on website; ExoticaAndBeyond.com My very best to you and yours. Kirby Allan
