“Rare Meat!” – A Fan’s Compilation

I still like to keep abreast of what’s being said about my old group. And if it floats my boat sufficiently, I’ll poach it for inclusion here. Case in point: I’ve long toyed with the idea of putting together a “lost album” of sorts, all the various promotional tracks and b-sides released during our Polygram days, but never collected anywhere, and for the most part no longer in print.

If there were anyone left at that label with a clue, I wouldn’t need to take such a project on myself, it’d get an official release. Now, thanks to Meat Puppets Yahoo Message Board member “nathang78,” I don’t have to do a damned thing; he’s done it for me. His “Rare Meat compilation includes all the tracks from the Polygram days and as many others as he can find, including stuff from the “Classic Meat” album, the “Keats Rides A Harley” comp, and the much-desired “You Love Me” EP, offered as a giveaway back during Curt’s first attempt to reform the band eight years ago.

You can download the 180 meg rar file HERE (password=meatpuppets)

136 Thoughts on ““Rare Meat!” – A Fan’s Compilation

  1. Derrick – I referenced the Meat Puppets in my blog the other day, and I’m glad I stumbled across your blog! This is an outstanding compilation… it’s great to hear some of these songs again that I loved in college, like “Fuck You,” “House Of Blue Lights,” and “Pee Pee The Sailor.” Keep up the great work!

  2. I saw that post. Glad to hear we were nice to you! I don’t have all the dates and locations fixed in my head any more, but I definitely remember a University gig from that tour. I remember doing an interview before the gig, and more importantly, I remember shooting the breeze with one of the security guards. He regaled me with stories of working with Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio and the rest of the Four Seasons back in the early sixties. He was either a musician or a studio worker — I can no longer even remember that much. I just remember being fascinated, and being the only one of our entourage who cared. The Four Seasons were not allowed on the van stereo, But I have always admired them.

  3. Funny… I think you remember more than you think. Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons actually played our Parents’ Weekend on campus a few months earlier, so that might have been (at least part of) what our security guy was referring to. Of course, it’s also possible that one of them was an old-time music biz guy… we had some crazy old University Police officers back then. Either way… Rare Meat will spend all day looping on my office computer, so… thanks! (I just have to remember to keep the volume down.)

Hey derrick, what sort of program do you open that with, it won’t work on my computer. It says it’s a “RAR” file, whta is that?

  5. RAR is another compression scheme. You can read more about it here.

This is a wonderful collection. Thanks.

For all I know the new record may be a dud, but that doesn’t change the fact that Christgau is an a-hole. In fact, given his recent track record, this review may very well prove to be a positive sign.

I saw the MP’s a few weeks back and, aside from the new drummer, two items were difficult for me to grasp: 1) the Kirkwood brothers now stand on opposite sides of the stage from the respective positions they used to occupy and, 2) Curt was playing a Fender.

  7. Funny that I discovered an a-hole while trying to stay “abreast.”

this is great, i haven’t yet downloaded the thing but i’m sure it will be great. This is so exciting, i’ve been making a list of what songs i don’t have and this collection has them ALL. GREAT!

but you know what’s sad? The fact that it makes me more happy that you’ve found some b-tracks and outtakes from first album than the reunion. I’ve been really optimistic about it, but it turns out that the record is total crap, and not only because Derrick is no longer with them. It’s either mellow and boring or Nirvana-like and that’s stupid because Nirvana is spawned from the Puppets-work. Everyone who has heard the album by now says that there is only one song worth listening. For me it’s the Stone Eyes.

anyways, keep up the good work, Derrick

PS were you offered a place in the reunion band? why did you refuse? did you anticipate the crapiness that it could produce?

  9. Rance Muhammitz on July 4, 2007 at 3:00 am said:

Shit dude, they were seriously on TOTALLY OPPOSITE sides of the stage? Sell-outs!

Thanks for putting up this edifying rarities compilation, yo. Like a train full of flowers, it ministers to my soul. I’ve been wanting to hear that cover of El Paso City again for the longest time.

And shame on them freaks for no letting you listen to Four Seasons in the tour van. That’s pretty Satanic of them. Fuck… even Slayer listens to “Oh, What A Night” when they’re in a reflective mood.

And just in case you’ve never immersed yourself in a well-known, but rarely played band from the 60′s named “The Kinks”, you really should do so. Everyone ripped off poor Ray Davies. The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, the fucking Beach Boys. It’s sad how little credit The Kinks get for influencing their peers in the 60′s.

  10. Rance – If there’s a notion in your head that I’m not thoroughly familiar with the Kinks, let it be banished now.

Malesh – I already have a good job.

The link to the Good Night Irene file is dead, does anyone know if it will be up again? Also does anyone have a file with just the You Love Me on it’s own? I’m on the old dial up it’ll take me 13 hours to download it.

  12. The link probably died from too many visits from Puppets fans.

  13. hi derrick, how are you? my name is cesar and i live in brazil. for all my country, the megaupload have just 4000 slots to download, so this slots are always in use, so i never can do the download of ”rare meat”, so can you put this file in rapid share?, because in rapid share i never have problem to download files, and i think it can be the solution for brazilian fans, because brazil is a very big country and 4000 slots is not enough for everbody make the download. if you can, how i said, put a link with rapid share server, for me and thousands of brazilian guys can do the download. derrick, thank you very much for the attenction, and i wait some answer. from your biggest fan (and drummer too), cesar chiozzo. thank you!

I keep reading alot of disparging remarks about the new Meat Puppets record. I’d like to weigh in and say that I think it’s a great record. Curt is an extremely under rated songwriter and is pretty much always doing something interesting. To give you an idea how I think this album ranks: It’s better than Eyes Adrift, not as good as the little known Curt Kirkwood lead Volcano (shortly after Eyes Adrift, same drummer I think – incredible stuff), better than Golden Lies and in the same ballpark as Too High To Die or Forbidden Places. It seems like a lot of people want them to sound the same as they did “back in the day” but this has never been a band that stood still. Anyway, give Rise To Your Knees a few listens, I think you’ll find that it’s well worth the time spent.

I already have all the eps, but I’m downloading anyway as there’s a few tracks I don’t have. I was excited to get Bali Ha’i on a file, but my record player will still get to be the only device worthy of playing it.
I wonder what version of Backwater it was?

thanks again Derrick for giving us the goods.

I was wondering if anyone could email me Bali Ha’i and Goodnight Irene. Thanks for the rare meat file I like white sport coat and El Paso city overs

  17. Whoa … Rare Meat indeed. I hadn’t heard that relaxing trance remix of “Scum”. Some of the others are new to me as well, like “Losing End”, of which I have only heard a live recording from ’81. Those two versions are drastically different in delivery from one another, but both highly enjoyable, in that endearing Meat Puppets way.

Having heard the great, early Pups cover of “Reach Out …”, I assume The Four Tops were allowed on the van stereo, but I can also appreciate the ‘Seasons.

    “Soooo lonely … Me-lan-choly”

  18. Just stumbled upon this compilation — WOW. It makes me wonder though, what else is out there that hasn’t appeared here? In particular, I’m thinking of a track called “We’re On” (from the DVD’s slideshow); Derrick once mentioned it’s found on the THTD sessions, though I haven’t seen that anywhere either. Would love some more information here….and, if Derrick or anyone else is up for it, some history on the tracks included in this “Rare Meat!” comp (especially tracks #1, 2, 15, 16, & 17).

    As always — much obliged!

Only an idiot could expect the new album to touch on stuff like “Up On the Sun, ” or “MP II.” Some of these new songs may take more than one listening to get into, but this album isn’t to be tossed aside. “Ice” is worth checking out, and Cris even contributes his banjo playing on “Tiny Kingdom.” I will admit however, I can’t say I like the new version of “New Leaf.” I like the RNO demo of it much better.

  24. Awesome! More free rare Meat Puppets stuff! Absolutely top quality in each and every way. The entire thing stands up as a big long treat throughout. As always, never a dull moment with the ‘Puppets!

I’m really thankful that the’re people out there that get the stuff together, and that this site here is up for spreading the wealth instead being out for making money out of such content. I’m smiles and Meat-warmth all over.

Haha, sorry Ian……I actually really like the new record myself.”Fly Like The Wind” and “Ice” being my favorites.”Ice” reminds me of something off “Mirage”……Drumming’s obviously not so tight, but the songs are good.

  26. what about “WONDERFUL SONG” from the Alive In The Nineties DVD???

    is that available?

    Sven

  27. Sven, if you’re talking about the song “We’re On,” I’m with you — I’d love to dig up a copy of that track…

  28. Hey Derrick, I had an idea for a title, if you ever decide to officially release some of these obscure tracks you have been so kind as to share with us.

    Meat Puppets’ Wurst

…with a picture of big Brat, or maybe a thick cut of beef on the cover.

You could even throw in a Vegan plug, by putting a ghostbuster symbol around the picture of Meat.

I took the liberty of entitling the CD which I burned of the First Album Session Outtakes “Meat Puppets’ Wurst”. Obviously, I mean that in the best possible way, as I love them … sort of like how Primus fans chant “Primus Sucks!” (seemingly sardonically, but with the utmost adulation) at their shows.

  29. Though I have never been inclined to obvious punning on the band name, at the same time I can assure you there’s way “wurst” than the first album outtakes.

Wow! I need to stop forgetting to check up on this site.

I’m just tickled pink that my little act of fan-piracy has aided in your nautical buoyancy! I’ve been meaning to do it for quite some time, but hesitated ’cause I thought it’d be too soon after the more recent releases such as “Classic Puppets.” I’d like to do a lossless version, but I don’t have the “Scum” remix as anything other than the MP3 that’s in this version.

It’s interesting to read that you were thinking about releasing such a compilation, though it’d take a double album just to include the non-RNO stuff, which would make an official release even less likely, I would think.

I hope I haven’t prevented you from potentially releasing CD, or otherwise high-quality, versions of other rarities such as “Bali Ha’i” and “Goodnight Irene” and some even rarer things like “Peeg,” the strange keyboard version of “Evil Love” (and another similar-sounding unknown Cris song) and especially that transcendant non-DVD version of “We’re On” that I bug you and others about every so often. Plus, I’m sure there’s a deep well of other stuff that could fill many more CDs, eh?

    I just uploaded those four latter-mentioned songs Here: http://rapidshare.com/files/45902768/ReallyReallyRareMeat.zip.html ~30MB ZIP. 320Kbps MP3.

The quality is very bad, with lots of hiss and the high frequencies fade in and out (mostly out). That’s how I got them. It was a trade with someone with whom I lost contact long ago (and didn’t really know in the first place). He didn’t know anything about them and he got them from someone else with whom he’d lost contact. Heh.

  38. You wouldn’t need to remember to visit this site if you subscribed to its RSS feed.

Hell, I wish Polygram were interested in doing a compilation of non-album tracks we recorded for them, but that’s not likely to happen. Good thing, then, there’s an internet.

Thanks for the good work, Nathan G.

“I Will Always Love You” only appeared on http://www.myspace.com/themeatpuppets for a time. It wasn’t downloadable (nor could it be grabbed from a browser’s temp directory), so the only way to get it was to record it manually through the sound card.

I read from someone on the Yahoo! Group that Curt recorded it himself.

  43. Ezra Hertmans on August 2, 2007 at 6:47 am said:

Thanks for this compilation! Looking forward to listening to it! I have one request though: any chance for some cover art for this? Chances are probably pretty slim, so I might have to create some myself ^^

  46. Recording it through your sound card wasn’t the only way to get “I Will Always Love You”. There exists a program that will “download”, bit for bit, any song from any MySpace page, even without the download button enabled. It bypasses the sound card, saving exactly what’s streamed to an un-re-encoded MP3 file. I’ll leave it up to you to find the program (which may not work any longer, as MySpace kept changing things behind the scenes to break it), but here’s the originally posted track in the exact quality in which it was streamed:

If anyone uses Rhapsody the new record is out there with a much more informed review by Tim Quirk? and a nice interview with Curt about how things are going… pretty cool!

Sorry, this is prolly the wrong place to rant about this but I am still burnt about that Christgau review… how can he take a cheap shot at band member in a review like that and maintain any credibility at all? It’s downright offensive. I’m sorry I clicked on the link to it.

I just read the AMG review and while not completely positive it seemed much more respectful, informed and no cheap shots. Thanks for letting me vent a little!

  53. I’d shut down free speech to rid us of that awful review. Well, someone who can see depth in “My Chemical Romance” shouldn’t write about good music. This album seemed too forced, but is an excellent testimonial to true puppetude!

  54. You would, huh? I’ve always enjoyed Bob Christigau’s reviews. They’re short and often funny.

Funny, I always prefer the bad reviews. I always did. Probably because I was never interested in “making it” in the first place. I certainly didn’t think reviewers have any more of a clue just because they can write puff bullshit praise that sounds like a rewritten press release (which is what it usually is).

At least the folks slamming it actually took the time to listen. Most of these papers just run a wire service review, and that’s only to help sell CDs or tickets for some business that’s running an add in the paper. Let’s face it: a lot of these “positive” reviews are glorified ads.

Frankly, I don’t give a shit what someone else’s opinion is. I can make my own decision. For most of us, all we need to know is there’s a new Puppets CD out. It doesn’t make a bit of difference what Joe Local-Guy-Who-Gets-Twenty-Five-Bucks-For-A-Five-Hundred-Word-Review thinks.

  55. Mark F on August 16, 2007 at 7:57 am said:

Point taken, Derrick, thanks for being the voice of reason! I was just kidding (well, sort of) about banning RS reviews and I assume Gavin was too (sounds like he was ripping on what I wrote).

  62. I never even read Mark F.’s review, and I didn’t realize we paralleled. I feel bad, though, because you are right. I read other reviews of the same CD, and they were just like ads. Christgau’s reviews are like the Rykodisk insert reviews. He takes time to listen and critique the music, in a free way. I guess I should have read first. Funny coincidence with Mark, though! Anyways, the bad reviews are quite original.

I’ve done a FLAC (lossless compression) version of my previous compilation. I’ve rearranged some things (track list is toward the bottom of this message) and have added StArSeEd’s vinyl recordings of “Bali Ha’i” and “Goodnight Irene.” The tracks are divided into the following four 220-240 megabyte ZIPs:

    Tracks 01-09: http://www.sendspace.com/file/u7y4q4 Tracks 10-19: http://www.sendspace.com/file/sgoi06 Tracks 20-28: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ekxx8m Tracks 29-35: http://www.sendspace.com/file/kz25nq

I may do a Torrent also, in case there are many who can’t get this from SendSpace (also, there’s only a 7-day file retention). So those who would like to help seed in such an event are encouraged to not rename or alter the FLAC files (the ZIPs don’t matter ’cause if I do the Torrent, it will just be one directory containing all of the FLACs. I’m too tired to think about it now… must… sleep!

    From the (new) included README.txt:

    Rare Meat!

Regarding the new Meat Puppets record, I think some people need to listen to the goddamn thing a few more times. It ain’t ‘II’ or ‘Up on the Sun’ (what is) but it’s still really good. Curt Kirkwood has written so many classic songs over the years but he’s still coming up with interesting ideas. Great site, Derrick, thanks for the cool links and info….

I think the new disc is filled with good ideas and experimentation. I really don’t understand why such heavy criticism gets aimed at Curt and Cris. They are innovators in a world brimming with dumbed down rock ,featuring utterly bland and derivative guitarists. The shows are a delight…do check them out!

  72. You’ve read criticism? I’ve seen maybe two articles that were less than enthusiastic.

Wow! My brother gave me these discs right before I went on my road trip to see the bro’s Meat in Kansas City at the end of August. I put it on tape, and later burned it onto my computer, but never had the song titles. I just looked at the discography at themeatpuppets.com, and it wasn’t listed. I’m so happy I can finally attach names to all the songs!

I got to speak to Cris before the show, and told him that I had been listening to Rare Meat. I think he had no idea what I was talking about. Until today, I had no idea it wasn’t an official release, either. Thanks, Mr. Bostrum

After discovering I had a slightly better copy than I first used,I’ve been re-posting that Phoenix 1985 concert film on You Tube. I have five numbered chapters posted so far( In my “Dullsville” channel/”Meat Puppets Phoenix 1985 Pt. 1 -5″). As many of you know, it’s a bit of a rough ride ,quality wise. This version is less zig zaggy with tracking errors ,and I bumped up the sound a little,…so, it’s an improvement. If you dig it, you can favorite the sequenced parts into a playlist and watch the show all the way through. Also, I’ve been weeding through the Pups posts and I have a 90 piece Meat Puppets YouTube playlist ( Dullsville channel) which has most of the best stuff. It will “leave you happy but insane”!

I first saw you guys back in the late 80s or early 1990s. I went to see your opening band Eleventh Dream Day at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. They put on a good set. Luckily, I stuck around to see you guys……..because I was BLOWN away. Walking out of that show, I said to my buds “Well, tomorrow I gotta go buy all their shit”. Which I did. I saved a review of that concert from the Chicago Tribune. I should post it up here.

Gawd dang, I’m loving this site. Thanks Derrick for all your hard work, great stuff.

Say, would anyone be willing to do a BnP for the Rare Meat stuff? I can get blanks out pronto….I’m a neaderthal when it comes to computer stuff. I’m at SkyYellowSunUSBlues@hotmail.com Thanks!

And tonite, guess what I’m doing? Seeing the Pups at Double Door!! Wish you were playing Derrick……All Hail the Meat Puppets!

Hi! I was able to download the two separate rar (flac) files from megaupload.com, but when I used stuffit to unzip the rar files, I got a box that asked me to enter a password, I assumed this was the “meatpuppets” password. after I hit enter, I got a dialog box that said the files were corrupt. Same thing happened when I downloaded the 192kbps Mp3 file. I am running this on a G5 mac. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be much appreciated. Regardless, this site is soooo awesome. Many thanks to Derrick for blowing up my Meat Puppets obsessed mind, and to Nathan G. for compiling the rare meat comp. Great Job. Take care!

I’d like to say that this compilation has provided me with some of the most amazing (as well as some of th emost odd) Meat Puppets songs ever written and or covered. Bali Hai’i is freakin’ awesome. White Sport Coat and House Of Blue Lights are amazing too – those are 50′s songs, right? Not All Right was pretty awesome, too.

  87. Hi Derrick – Have you ever heard that live recording from Liberty Lunch in Austin on the Huevos tour. I think it was broadcast on the radio on some station at some point. I have a tape of it somewhere, a bit of a buzz in the background, but good sound overall. It was a mega crazy, really creative flippin show. If you dont remember the show or have not heard the live tape, I would happily send you a copy. Bissell

  88. Thanks Bissell; I have a copy of that tape.

In fact, I remember going over to the engineer’s house after the show, where he dubbed us a copy.

  89. why there is not the song pieces of me? definitely the best.

  90. Nathan G. on September 17, 2008 at 8:23 pm said:

Because this isn’t a “best of” compilation. These are tracks that are not on the standard albums.

  91. A couple of possibly overlooked items:

I remember Paul Leary telling me that when he produced “Too High”, the band had recorded “an entire album’s worth of Marty Robbins songs” just for the hell of it. Of course, back then the only time Paul and Gibby weren’t exaggerating was when they were too busy flat-out making shit up. I’m aware of “El Paso City” and “White Sport Coat” — are there a bunch more Robbins tunes that were recorded but never mixed down or whatever?

(OTOH, Paul was definitely telling nothing Butt the Hole truth when he said that producing the album was a case of “Imagine your favorite band making a record, and you get to make it sound exactly the way you want it to sound!”)*

Second, I was just skimming thru my old VHS tapes and found some footage of the Pups appearing on “Corp-Aid ’94″, which was a benefit concert to raise money for Exxon to make up for their recent multi-million-dollar court settlement. How come there’s no version of “We Are All Corporations (In Our Own Way)” on the comp? And (more seriously) I know that the male who does the spoken part during the “Corp-Aid” performance is deadpan comic Steven Wright, but who’s the female?

(I’m in Austin, so I suppose that if it’s necessary I could ask the Kirkwoods. Actually, I used to live on Kirkwood Street here, next door to Zeitgeist/The Reivers, whose first 45 was on “Kickwood Records”!)

    • mnw aka ndj aka kwl aka etc.

*From an article by Tim Stegall: “The only producer I’d ever worked with was John Paul Jones,” Leary says, “and he’s really an old rock star. Other than that, it would have been nice to have worked with producers, to know what the job’s really supposed to be. I went in to do the Meat Puppets, and all of a sudden there’s a record label wanting this, that, and the other, and I didn’t know how to react to that shit at all, y’know! They’d come into the studio and wanna hear something, so I’d put on Marty Robbins and fire up a big fat reefer and make ‘em listen to that for 45 minutes. And they’re like, No! No! We meant the band!'Fuck you! Get outta here!’ Turn the high hat down, Paul.'Okay, Stuart, turn the high hat Up!’” he laughs. “I didn’t know how to deal with it at all.

“It’s not always easy,” continues Leary. “Some bands have managers that want things, labels that want things, the band wants something, and it’s not always easy getting something out of it for everyone, much less yourself, which is the only person I really give a damn about. Why make a record if I’m not gonna enjoy it? Sometimes, you’re lucky and it works out, and everyone is smiling.”

Among those smiling is Curt Kirkwood: “Paul has his ideals, what he thinks is cool and so on. But he doesn’t try to mess with the artist’s intent so much. He helps out a lot on the vocals. That’s what we wind up pretty much trying to get the coolest stuff on. The other stuff comes pretty easy. He just likes being in the recording studio, I know that for a fact. He told me it’s the only place where he has control over his life. It’s not that he’s that wild or anything. I guess he just feels like he’s at the mercy of the fates, most of the time.”"

  92. Hey guys what’s up, this is Moped Dan’s niece, jut wanted to see what was up with ya’ll and see when you’re coming to the New England area. We’d love to see you. Got my husband hooked on you, and our friend Kurt idolizes your music. Get back to me, hope you’re doing well and keep the music coming.

  93. Those were the only two Marty Robbins songs recorded during those sessions. Paul is exaggerating.

The only version of “Corporations” is from the “TV Nation” broadcast. It was never recorded or released in any other form.

The woman in the clip is Karen Duffy. She was a MTV VJ at the time, as well as a Michael Moore regular.

  94. Part of the corp-aid performance is on youtube.

  95. Hey, I was wondering if there were any demos or unreleased songs recorded during the “Forbidden Places” or “Too High To Die” sessions, and, if so, would you be able to post them?

Also, I know this has been said many times but it can never be said enough: Thank you so much for creating and maintaining this site, and thank you for all the music you’ve posted already. It’s amazing to have a site like this for one of my favorite bands.

  96. Also, I don’t know if you’d have anything to do with this, but several years ago just before the “Volcano” album the now defunct site curtkirkwood.com had two demos posted to advertise an upcoming solo album(which didn’t happen until several years later). The demos were available for download and the songs were an early version of “Enemy Love Song” that sounded a lot different(different lyrics as well if I remember right) than the one on the album now, and a demo of “Twisted Seeds”. I think both of them were just Curt by himself. I downloaded them but lost the files and now I can’t find them anywhere. Does anyone else remember this or have these songs?

  97. One of these days, I’ll get around to compiling the rest of the unheard demos from our various albums. Unfortunately, other projects currently keep that task off the front burners.

  98. I love your drumming on Up on the Sun. Would you rejoin the Meat Puppets if you were offered a briefcase full of cash?

  99. The Enemy Love Song Demo is on their Myspace page

  100. i know i’m a little late on this, but is there any chance that someone could repost the link to “I will always love you” i missed it when it was on their myspace and i’m sure it’s worth hearing and having!

  104. Derrick you gave us at KSUA in Fairbanks a very long interview in the early 90s that absolutely blew everyone who heard it away. I transcribed it afterwards and put it in the ‘zine that accompanied our show, Experiment Alpha (a comedy, drama and music hybrid show). Furthermore, you corrected the lyrics that the band I was in at the time was using for Severed Goddess Hand (“But what do I know, I’m just the drummer”) which we’d just picked up about a week before the interview and only our main guitarist knew (unlike me, the vocalist) I mention it because I am sending a digitized version to one of our web sites of all our zines to commemorate my co-host, who died tragically less than a week ago. Not only did you give us a lot of insight into the early years, and into the music biz, but I think it was on your dime, because we didn’t reach you at first, but rather your (step?) father, and you called us back.

As soon as I know where everything is going I’ll post about it. My co-host probably had the audio archived, but because drugs and crime were involved in his demise, I probably can’t get at it.

  105. Sorry to hear about your co-host. I look forward to seeing (and linking to) the interview. Let me know.

  106. nice guys very sensitive

  107. I went and watched the filming of Finn and Friends, a locally produced tv show in 1985 when the MP played Maidens Milk and Swimming Ground live soon after Up on the Sun came out. I had recorded this show on vhs hoping to see my friend and I in the audience. I had it up until a few years ago. I had left it at my mom’s house when I moved out and she finally dumped all the vhs tapes one day. Does anyone by chance have this appearance on tape?

  109. Seriously, thanks for everything you are doing, it’s refreshing to find someone in a position like yourself that actually gives a rip about the fans, it seems most bands couldn’t care less about their followers..

As a huge fan of everything Meat Puppets I have a burning desire to own everything ever released by you guys, lol, including the rare stuff, unfortunately, some releases are simply impossible to find. I actually prefer to purchase the CD’s rather than download off of the web because I’m an obsessive audiophile and simply cannot stand the mp3 format or anything less than the Redbook standard. Do you think it would ever be possible to get some if not all of the out of print Meat Puppet releases available for download in CD quality, my life would be complete if I cold finally have the complete Puppets discography at my fingertips, lol, I would pay good money for that privilege.

  110. I graduated from the Judson School in Paradise Valley and I think we’ve met. Regardless, you rock! Keep on keepin on! Now living in Asheville, NC, wish you would play at the Orange Peel. Let me know .

Rick – On the off chance that you read this, I was able to download the Enemy Love Song and Twisted Seeds demos thanks to the Wayback Machine. If you still need them I’d be happy to share them

Now, just in case anyone else happens to be reading this still. On the 1999 version of the Meat Puppets’ web site (http://web.archive.org/web/19991013042650/http://meatpuppets.com/) they posted links to “something tasty” (tasty.mp3) and the “outtake from ‘Live in Montana’” (outtake1.mp3). Does anyone know what these are and, even better, would you be willing to share them if you have them?

  115. “tasty.mp3″ was a minute’s worth of a live solo acoustic version of “Diaper,” and the outtake was probably “Star Wars Theme” which got the axe because we couldn’t afford to pay the licensing for any more covers on “Montana.”

Ditto on reposting this comp. I have been rediscovering The Meat Puppets and would like to hear this. And if anyone has those two songs from the Sam single, stick those on also. Enjoyed the book a lot. Felt anticlimactic towards the end. I’m glad Cris is doing well, but it was a bit too much ‘life is wonderful’. I don’t necessarily believe that life is completely grand with Cris or Curt since they got back together. I would’ve like to know more about how they felt about the current musical climate and how they felt they fit in. I also would’ve like to read more critical (not necessarily negative) thinking about anything. It felt like something was missing and maybe it was that. I’ll be reading it again soon.

  128. Here’s a copy of Rare Meat, assuming Mediafire leaves it alone (they now have an algorithm recognizing copyrighted albums, but I think compilations are safe, for now). I added Sam B-side “Bali Ha’i” as well as “I Will Always Love You” and “We’re On”. (@Dave above — no idea about any other Sam B-side) http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?uug7puou4vcof2o

BTW, here’s Volcano, Curt’s post-Eyes Adrift project from 2004, with Sublime guys et. al. Very highly recommended. They only printed something like 1000 copies on an Indie label. http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?63mfn789ifin86b You can get a copy of Volcano in FLAC at wohlers.org: http://www.wohlers.org/puppets/volcano/

If there are any problems with the links feel free to email me at mcdackblogHUEVOS at gmail d0t c0m (remove the pups album title from the name).

(Derrick — if you’re not happy with the Volcano links for any reason, I will repost with just the Rare Meat. Thanks either way, love the blog.)
